Ipe Iron Wood & Honduras Mahongany
Wood
Ipe Iron Wood, the clear choice for your Wood SportsMate. Ipe is
an incredibly durable Brazilian Hardwood rated by the U.S. Forest
Lab for 25 years plus. Naturally resistant to fire, insects, moisture,
and movement, this air or kiln dried hardwood takes a backseat to
no wood. Clear grade only, no knots, no sapwood, no maintenance,
none.
Ipe Iron Woods are tough! Their top rating for durability has been
proved again and again in demanding commercial applications - from
Dinner Key Marina in Miami, to the famous Atlantic City Boardwalk.
Ipe requires no coatings or treatments for durability
ever.
This
wood is so tough you have to drill a pilot hole in order to screw
a stainless steel screw into it and you can actually drill and tap
it to receive a threaded bolt, just like a piece of metal. It has
twice the density and durability as Maple or Oak and three times
that of Red Oak. The density of Ipe minimizes the ability of fungus
and mold to grow on it, making it the best choice for using food
products. The only problem you will have with this Ipe SportsMate,
is that if you drop it on your toe you'll be more careful the next
time and if you drop it into the lake its going to sink so don't
try to use it as a float. Ipe has a class A fire rating, which means
it will burn about as well as a piece of concrete or steel. You
can spill anything on its surface or place a boiling hot pot on
your Ipe Iron Wood SportsMate, and not worry about hurting it. The
SportsMates are hand crafted by a Master Carpenter, sanded to a
smooth beautiful surface and then a clear finish of Tung Oil or
Teak Oil has been hand rubbed on to preserve the natural color,
which ranges from a rich russet to a classic reddish brown. Left
unsealed, the wood will weather to a handsome silver patina.
Honduras
Mahogany Wood, the second choice for your Wood SportsMate. A very
durable hardwood rated by the US Forest Lab for 50 years. Resistant
to fire, insects, moisture and movement, this air or kiln dried
hardwood, in our opinion, makes a better choice than the Rock Maple
commonly used on butcher blocks. Selected for its lighter weight
but high strength properties and attractive ring figures on plain
sawn surfaces. Maintenance on this wood is minimum.
